    Geography

‘Inspiring a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.’

At Sacred Heart, our intent behind the Geography curriculum is to ensure that the children progress in their knowledge and understanding about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. Our focus this year is on monitoring the whole school coverage and progression of skills. This is to enable the children to become independent learners, and help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. We believe that we can inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, through providing the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time. We use a cross curricular approach across various subjects to immerse children in their learning.

Geography is an important part of the National Curriculum. When children leave education, we hope they will appreciate the world that they live in, as well as having an understanding of the challenges it faces. The National Curriculum focuses on many different areas of learning within Geography as a subject. Initially, the children will develop their locational and place knowledge before looking at the human and physical geography of these areas.

At Key Stage One and Two, teachers use the National Curriculum to plan high quality lessons, which provide an insight into the world around them. The Early Years plan from The Early Years Framework, ensuring high quality and is also delivered thus meeting the Early Learning Goals – Understanding the World.

Teachers plan for Geography on a half termly basis, using The National Curriculum as a guide to ensure the delivery of high-quality, effective and progressive lessons which will enhance children’s knowledge and understanding of geography and the formation of the world around them.
